Simple Ways To Make Your Window Graphics Stay In Place Longer

by Michele Carroll

Whether it's a family name, a team logo, or a favorite quote, removable clear vinyl window graphics add personality and flair to a vehicle. However, these window graphics are also constantly exposed to the elements, and as a result, they are often susceptible to damage. Learn what you can do to keep your graphics in good condition and looking better longer.

Thoroughly Clean the Surface

The first thing you need to do to keep your window graphics in place longer is to ensure you are working with a clean surface. Whether your graphic is designed with an adhesive surface or a non-adhesive surface, such as a window cling, the material will only stick to the surface if it is clean. Make sure any wax residue, dirt, or dust is removed beforehand for the best result.

Find the Right Placement

Many window graphics can be reused, but it's not always the best idea, as the clingy or adhesive portion of the graphic design will start to wear away over time. To maximize the amount of use you get from the graphic, make sure you are confident where you want to place the graphic so that you don't have to remove it and replace it. You can even use tape to apply the graphic to different areas so that you can get an idea of how the placement will look once it's done.

Choose the Right Day

Sure, you can place your window graphic at any time you'd like. However, there are instances when it's better to install than others. Ideally, install the window graphic on a day when the temperature is on the warmer side. When it's cold outside, the glass on your vehicle will also be cold. It takes longer for the adhesion process to finish or cure when the glass is colder than it does when it's warm. As a result, it will take longer for the graphic to adhere to the glass, which elevates the risk of it falling off in the process.

Hold off on Water and Rain

Try your best to keep your vehicle away from water, such as from a carwash, or rain in the days after you install the window graphic. As mentioned, it takes some time for the graphic to fully adhere to the glass. If even a small amount of water is able to collect on the underside of the graphic, it will inhibit the adhering process. Make sure you don't wash your car right away and check the weather to make sure rain isn't in the forecast.
